I was thrilled to be able to meet the 2 rescue mountain lion cubs at the SWCC for reference photos the upcoming exhibit. They were small enough that I could get down on the floor with them to get some good reference material. I’m sure that will not be the case in a few weeks!
Here is the rescue story from the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center:
Two precious baby boys were orphaned - and saved by their mother's love in her last living moments.
The Arizona Game & Fish Department staffs wildlife biologists to study populations of wild animals all across Arizona. One of the ways they do this is through tranquilizing wild animals and placing tracking devices on them - collars or other types like ear tags - that fall off automatically after a set period of time. The collars send a signal periodically that tell biologists where the animals are and approximate their moving patterns, giving valuable data on both population size and territorial locations.
If a collared animal does not move for a longer-than-usual period of time, the collar sends a signal that the animal is likely no longer living. Arizona Game & Fish then sends out biologists to see what happened and collect the collar or other device.
Officers received one such signal two weeks ago for an adult female mountain lion. Officers located her - and next to her, they found her two tiny, hungry babies.
Due to the types of injuries she sustained, the mother's cause of death was determined to be a car collision. Found quite a distance from the nearest road, biologists realized that after she had been struck, she walked all the way back to her den, in pain, trying to reach her kittens.
She passed away as she reached them. However, because of her love and her instinct to protect her babies, Game & Fish located the two little boys - and both are alive today at Southwest Wildlife.
At 4-5 weeks old, the two brothers are voraciously eating and exploring their small, safe enclosure. Since they can't be raised by a wild mother, they will live the rest of their lives in a sanctuary environment. They don't have names yet, as it hasn't yet been determined if they will remain at Southwest Wildlife for their whole life or if they'll transfer to another facility once they grow up a bit more. But you will certainly be able to watch them growing up in the coming weeks!
While our hearts break for the suffering they've had to endure with the loss of their mother in a horrific accident, we are so grateful their lives were saved. Because you believe in them, they are receiving nourishing formula and nurturing love every single day.
Thank you for your compassion. Together we are truly saving your wildlife - one life at a time.
